Vision Statement
A Vision statement is a paragraph that generally describes the kind of life you want to live. If you want to achieve something you need a clear vision of what you are trying to achieve. How can you ever hope to get somewhere if you have no idea of what somewhere looks like? You might even already be there but because you don't know what it looks like you are always thinking that you have not yet arrived.
This is very different from your purpose statement because you are aiming at a vision for your future. Be prepared to dream and be outrageous.
The sad truth is that without an idea of what you want to get from life you will always be living someone else's dream - not your own. If you want your own life then you need a vision.
The importance of a vision statement is that it gives you something to aim for.
A good way to think about life is as a journey. If you set off on a journey with no destination in mind you might feel like you are living on the edge and enjoying yourself but you will soon discover that your life is going nowhere and the kind of life you could have enjoyed has past you by.
This is not the time to get all nostalgic and try to rebuild what you once had but its the time to look forwards and plan for what you can have.
So when you have your vision of what your life could be it starts to happen. When you know what you want the opportunities to get it start to materialise - not through some mystic co-incidence but because you are now thinking about how you can get your dream.
Some days are not as good as others for us - are they? Normal people have days when life is a struggle. This is just the time that your vision statement comes into its own. When you feel down and the whole world seems against you remembering why you get out of bed and the kind of life that lies ahead can be a great motivator.
Make sure you have a vision for your life so that you can live the kind of life you want to live.
To start creating your vision you need a little space. Give yourself some time to think through what you really want in life. Then start to create a vision of what that looks like. Make it as real as you can. Imagine the place you are living in, the people who are there, what your typical day is like.
If you are a person of faith you would include your ideas of what God wants you to be like in the vision. What would God's idea of your life be?
You are not thinking about how you are going to get it yet you are just thinking about what it is like.
Now write it down.
Look at it every day. Revise it. Daydream it. The next stage is to start planning for how you will get from where you are now to your vision.
